I know that every stylist is different when it comes to price and how to charge. I have 3 different ways I charge and I teach this in every extension class I do. I think it is the most important part of this whole business because stylist don’t realize by adding extensions how much more of an income they will have. Everyone is shocked after I run numbers and add up all the things we can get for our services. In doing bead tip extensions or glue in extensions these particular methods are referred to as strand by strand extensions…

So… the first way to charge is per strand, normally $5 to $8 per strand depending on the length of the extension and if it is straight or wavy because each of these differences means more money you as a stylist will pay per bag. That way you are charging enough to make money over the cost of the product. I personally only charge this way if my clients are just using a few strands as a fun color or a highlight in their hair.

The second option is per hour… this means you have your client pay for the product and then charge them per hour to apply the product. I would suggest you charge anywhere from $60 to $100 an hour. If you want to charge more than $100 an hour you probably need to charge the 3rd option….

The third option is set price, this includes everything! Hair, beads, application, cut, style and anything else you may need to do with the hair before your client leaves your chair. That way you never disclose the cost of hair or the cost of your services, its all in the set price… I charge my existing clients around $800 because all my clients have become my friends. That’s how it is with every stylist and I want them to feel taken care of and new clients I charge $1,200 to $1,600 depending on how much hair I use. I have a full clientele and don’t have a lot of time or room for newbz so if I am going to squeeze someone in I want it to be worth my time.

These ideas are what I have found to be the best options for me and been successful in using them:-)

Okay this a is very common question from stylist or new commers to the extension world. When you are doing a full head on a client who wants length and they have short hair you will always be using more hair to blend the extensions in. You want it to look natural and like the extensions are their very own hair… you need to have plenty of hair to achieve this look:-) So you will need about 5 to 6 bags for someone with thin short hair and 7 to 10 bags for someone with thick short hair. I always like to have an extra bag just in case because I hate when I run short and I have to send my client home half done. It never ends up good because they don’t like it and then they think when its all done they still wont like it… drama to say the least! That is why I like to be prepared and have an extra bag on hand. If your clients hair is past their shoulders you may not need as much because their hair is long and you wont see the line of demarcation as much. In this case thin hair you may need 4 to 5 bags and thick hair you will need around 7 to 8 bags. The most important thing is for your clients to have thickness all the way to the ends…if you use to little of hair it will end up looking like a rat tail on the end! This rule apply s to fusion hair extensions and bead tip extensions.

When I have stylist call and want to know how to apply the extensions as far as placement, I usually tell them it is a pretty easy deal after you do your first client because all that I am telling them will then make sense. So if you are doing a full head or even a partial head you always work from the bottom to the top, the reason is the extensions are going to be tight and if you were to work from the top to bottom you would have to flip each row up and clip it in order to do the next row. This causes a lot of discomfort for you client and feels pretty rotten too, I have had someone try that on me and it was like someone was pulling on my hair the whole time. NOT FUN! Each client will be different as far as what kind of lay out you may want to do… meaning if they have thick hair or thin hair you may want to change your pattern. I normally do a brick lay, put an extension in and then skip a space next to it the size of what I would take for an extensions and then put another extension in after that… repeating this pattern as I move up on the clients scalp. I also do straight rows not skipping any spaces at all, the only spaces I leave is the hair in-between each row of extensions… like a curtain of hair in-between each row of extensions. I doesn’t matter what type of extensions except clip in hair extensions because that is a different application all together but as far as a more permanent version these placements will help you in your applications. You can choose to leave large sections of free hair (hair with no extensions in it) or small rows/small sections in-between each row its up to the stylist to decide what will look best over all. The key points are not to go to far into the crown area with the extensions and to stay about 1/2 an inch or a full inch away all the perimeters. I also like to stay about an inch up from the nap when I start so that you cant see the extensions when your clients put their hair up in a pony, that is never cute:-)

I think that clients are under the impression that extensions are magical and can change their hair from a pixie cut to this long gorgeous movie star hair…that is not totally true. Sorry to say but there are a lot of variables that can tell you weather or not your client is a candidate for extensions. There are a few that may seem obvious but some people don’t know so Ill tell you now, extensions are not for people who are balding. If you are going bald or have little to no hair due to thinning there will not be enough of your own hair to attach the extensions to. I know it is sad but its true, I have a handful of woman who are fairly young…in their late 30′s to 40′s who have extreme cases of thinning and they would love extensions and I would love them to have extensions so #1 I can make some fabulous cashola but #2 is so that they can have that beautiful hair they deserve. But the truth of the matter is it wont look good and in the end it will do more damage then good, it will brake their hair off! The other obvious is if their hair is 2 or 3 inches long! No, this is not going to look good. I have not seen one yet turn out good…. and I mean when they want to go from 2 or 3 inches to 18 or 20 inches long, it definitely wont blend and look the way they think it will. My personal opinion is they need to at least have all their hair to their chin or for sure below their ears. Then you would need to asses if it would look good at shoulder length or longer. Do what is going to look best and inform your client as well. Your the professional so take charge because your clients trust you:-) You will need to explain to them that the extensions are not like a wig where you can cover the top layers at the crown of your head…with extensions you will see the top layer of hair then the extensions underneath so you need to make sure the hair at the crown of the head is long enough to blend and help make the extensions look natural not “fake”

I also think another mistake is for people to think long hair is easy. I have heard a million times, “I wish I had long hair so I could throw my hair in a pony and be out the door…” well I’m here to tell you there is no throwing anything and going anywhere with these bad boys!!! Extensions take work and work equals time! So you or your clients need to know it will take time and work to make sure you have a good experience with the extensions, no matter if it is glue in extensions or i tip extensions.

I had a client who wanted a change, she wanted to do something BIG but just could not decide what. Her heart was set on extensions but she was going back and forth with all sorts of ideas. She wanted to feel sexy, she told me:-) She is a mother of 7 and her last two are twins. WOW!!! Busy woman at that and just wanted to feel good about herself. Before I even talked numbers with her I told her all the work that goes into extensions…you can read how to care for them on our blog, I wrote a whole page about it but it takes a lot of time. Its not a wash and go deal. At the end of me explaining the whole process she said, “Geesh if I didn’t know better I would think your talking me out of them rather than into them.” I told her that was not the case but I wanted to be sure she new what she was getting into before she spent the money. After putting in a full head of extensions and $1200 dollars later my client called me after 2 weeks and said, “I CANT DO THIS” I hate to laugh but looking back it was bound to happen… she is a busy mom with twins at the ages of 3 and cleans houses on the side. She told me after hovering over toilets all day cleaning and trying not to get her mane of hair caught in the toilet brush she was done. All I can say is she was not mad at me or unhappy with me because I educated her before hand. I did feel awful so I took them out for free but I was happy that I explained to her in detail what she was to expect. If we can do this with our clients I think it will help with a lot of heart ache. Our clients become our friends and we would never want our friends to feel like we had taken advantage of them. So explain the pro’s and con’s and put the dollar bill signs aside so they can make a good decision. That way your not in the dog house and you will still have a client when its all said and done.

Just be sure whoever you do the extensions on is a candidate because they are not for everyone!

I have to tell you that in Opulence’s Hair extension classes we go over the application for half of the time. Just talking about how to apply glue in extensions, or cold fusion extensions takes time but it is well worth it. I think most stylists see the dollar bill signs of what they could make doing extensions and forget that it is a tedious job. I know of certain stylist in my salon who wont do over 4 bags of hair because they just couldn’t handle it. I love doing extensions and I don’t have any issues with taking the time it needs to put them in right. I liken it unto acrylic nails, in school when each of us had to learn how to do acrylic nails we either loved it or hated it. That is what extensions are like….I see a TON of clients who will come in to have their current extensions taken out (that were not put in by me) and I can tell the stylist got careless towards the end of the application. You should start at the bottom and work to the crown of the head when doing extensions. So I see that near the neck line it has small partings and looks like they were taking really nice sections. Towards the top, around the ears and mid section its large partings, you can’t distinguish rows and huge chunks of glue or a ton of hair jammed into the beads just to get done quick. It is obvious the stylist got sloppy because it was taking to much time or it was to tedious for them. Doing it right the first time around will help you when you go to take them out and help your client to have a great experience. Remember that your client is paying you to do a good job so take the time it needs to make it nice and comfortable for your client. Taking large sections of your clients hair to attach the extensions to can over correct the clients hair and make it brake off. As well as taking to small of sections, it causes problems because there is not enough hair to attach the extension to and there is to much weight on the few strands of hair ultimately causing breakage as well. Having huge clumps of hair in each section is also uncomfortable for your clients to sleep on. There are many reasons why you need to take the appropriate sizes to attach the extensions and they are all beneficial for you and your clients. So lets do it right!

Hair extensions are a high maintenance product all the way around. There is no getting around it…this is just the way it is but it is way worth the work! No matter the type weather it is I tip hair extensions, fusion hair extensions, weft hair extensions, or even clip in extensions it all takes work! I believe with 5 easy tips it can lead you to a successful experience with extensions…

Brushing (single most important step):

Often: 3-4 times each day!
Ends to root of hair.
Be gentile while brushing.
Brush before showering…. let the hair air dry after your shower about half way or more before you try to comb through it. Make sure while its air drying you put all your products in so it will be soft and beautiful. The brush you use will help this process as well, I really like a paddle brush with no little balls on the end of the bristles. This way you can get through all the hair and it wont end up frizzy either.

Drying:

Towel / air dry first.
Apply a leave in conditioner, silk serum, and thermal protector.
Part off into sections and apply products to sections separately.
Dry on a cool to warm setting. (dry in down ward… don’t blow dry upwards) anything to prevent tangling is what you want to do.

Styling:

Plan on 20 – 30 min. a day to style your hair.
Use products daily.
BRUSH throughout the day! Use a flat iron or curling iron to style—helps make hair smooth. (Second most important step for care.)

Braid:

There is a ton ton ton of different types of hair out there. The thing you want the most is for the hair you buy no matter where in the world it is from is for it to be REMY! I wanted to talk a minute to tell you about remy hair extensions because I want to educate you and make sure you understand exactly what it is. We get asked on a regular basis what remy means and the easiest way to describe what remy is….is that the hair is all flowing in the same direction in the extension. Pretty simple:-) All of Opulence’s hair is remy! There are companies our there that will say we have human hair extensions but it will not be remy. We have made sure that all of Opulence’s hair is the highest quality of remy you can get and it is the most affordable. The only non-remy item we carry is our ten piece clip in hair extensions, they are a high heat resistant synthetic hair extension…we did this so it would be more affordable for the customers who just want it for the weekend or an event. That way they are only spending $60 vs hundreds of dollars on a human hair clip on hair extension.

We want to make sure that you as a stylist or end user like the experience of having hair extensions. Having remy hair extensions means it lessens the probability of the hair tangling or matting. It also helps the hair last longer than just the norm. I want to be sure and tell you that just because its a remy hair extension product DOES NOT mean you can do what ever you want. You NEED to follow the hair care guide line to ensure the best out come with your hair:-)

I have people ask all the time what method is best… is fusion hair extensions, i tip extensions, or clip in extensions the best? Each method is different and cater to different users all together. In general the fusion hair extensions, glue in hair extensions and bond tip hair extensions can be used on anyone but is the best when used on clients with really thin hair. You would never use cold fusion hair extensions or I tip hair extensions on someone who has thin, thin hair because there is simply not enough hair to attach it to. So the fusion hair extensions would be the best for that particular client with thinning hair.

The cold fusion hair extensions, I tip hair extensions and bead tip hair extensions are the best for a client with average to thick hair. This way you are able to attach the extensions to enough hair that it wont break off. Cold fusion hair extensions, I tip hair extensions, and bead tip hair extensions are the same method that you would attach the feather extensions or a fun color like purple hair extensions or pink hair extensions. There is also the factor of being able to offer every type of extension because your client has a personal preference. I have some clients who dislike one kind over another so we stick with what they like.

The clip in hair extensions or clip on hair extensions are best for clients who don’t want to be “married” to the extensions. Meaning they just want them for a fun occasion or event but not full time. Usually clip in extensions are much more affordable as well vs a full head of a more permanent extension.

In the end its what is best for the clients not what you are best at doing. You want your client to have a good experience with extensions so they will come back and refer other clients as well.

When extensions first came about it was years ago. If we think back to where it all began it was in the colonial times when they started to wear wigs. We have always had “fake” hair from days of old till now. The next great step was to braid them in and then to what we will talk about today and that is “gluing” them in or what we know as fusion hair extensions or glue in hair extensions. Obviously this method has been perfected over the years and is now a very common application in extensions. Opulence offers fusion hair extensions and glue in hair extensions. Our bond is made of a keratin/protein base product that is not damaging to the hair. You need to put them in right and take them out right to make sure you don’t damage the clients hair. That is a huge portion of the whole process. I hear a ton of horror stories about extensions and the client will say I will NEVER use glue in or fusion again but in all reality it was the way it was applied or the way it was taken out that broke their hair off in the first place. It was never the method ie glue in extensions at all but they are under the impression it is all about the product. Don’t misunderstand me….I know you need good product to make sure your clients have a good experience but I am ALSO saying it needs to be applied and removed properly for success:-)

Opulences “bond” meaning the tip of the hair where the keratin/protein bond gathers all the lose strands of hair together is thick. You can view our bond tip on fusion hair extensions. This thickness offers the ability to attach the strand to an average size section (about the size of a pencil eraser) or if your client has thin hair you can cut the bond tip in half length wise and make 2 strands out of 1. This way you are stretching the amount of hair your buying. For example, there are 20 strands per bag and you can make 40 strands by cutting them in half. Now, you should only do this is they have very thin hair or towards the front of the face…. you don’t want to skimp on the hair because you would never want anyone to know your client has hair extensions. You always want people to look at your client and ask themselves, “Is that all her hair?” That’s loads better than, “Oh my gosh, that girl totally has hair extensions!” Remember your name is on everyone of your clients and you want people to like what they see because they are potential customers.

You will need to use our bond remover found on hair extension tools to get the hair out when the time comes. Our bond will last you anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks if taken care of properly. Our remover was made especially for our bond and you will NEED to use it to get it out. Do not try anything else because it wont work and you could damage your clients hair with other products so just use the recommended remover. You may need to move certain bonds up or replace a few around the face. This is normal but make sure you tell your clients the damage they could cause if they leave the extensions in to long. I find if my clients leave the extensions in longer than 8 to 16 weeks that they catch brushes on the hair extensions and end up pulling them out or accidentally clamp their flat iron down on the bonds when they are trying to straighten their hair…. huge mess on their hands. So they can cause damage by letting them go and not getting them taken out. I am a firm believer in educating your clients on all there is so they can make a good decision when the time comes and nothing can fall back on me as a stylist with them telling me….”You never told me…”
